Up, Up and Away!

Recently I took a flight to Chicago and observed some interesting changes. I haven’t flown for over a year so I was prepared for the horror stories you see on the news such as the long lines at the security checkpoint and the possible cheap thrill feel up the security guard would give me. What I wasn’t prepared for was the excellent service and pleasant experience I received from United Airlines.

My flight was last minute and being last minute I expected to pay with my life savings. Fortunately I was able to purchase a round trip ticket for $197.50. Most other airlines wanted to charge over $450.00 for the same ticket with a departure time of 6am. I’m a morning person but I like watch the sunrise while I am on the ground not while I am coasting in mid air. Secondly, I didn’t have to print a boarding pass. Wow! Look at technology! I was able to have my boarding pass scanned from my phone. As a plus sized woman, I need a little more room in my seat. The Ticket Agent changed my seat to an aisle with no one sitting next to me. My beautifully packed carry on had to be checked since it didn’t fit in the little carry on display. (Promise I packed light) Guess what? No charge! Last but not least, United provided a sitcom for my entertainment pleasure. How cool is that! I didn’t even expect it.

Note to self and all for future trips. Check United first for flights. Make sure to check my bag at the gate to avoid charges (I know cheap trick). And finally say please and thank to flight attendants. They give you wings!

Destination Dining

Prosciutto, Melon, and Walnuts

I love food! Food is good for the soul, body and spirit. Yeah, Yeah, I indulge just a little too much but for the most part, food is an important part of life. If you look at the most significant aspects of your life, I bet they are surrounded by food. Where would we be without birthday cake, chocolate or family dinners?

In my quest to find an inexpensive way to travel, I discovered destination dining. Destination dining is traveling with food. Instead of hopping on a plane and getting your passport stamped by customs, travel to the grocery store and create your own authentic meals from the countries you want to visit. Last week, Mr. Diva and I visited Italy. Of course I was inspired after watching Eat. Love. Pray. I have fallen in love with a simple dish of melon and prosciutto ham. Who know it would be so good? We included some delicious wine and olives. Yum! I am ready to go back already. In true diva fashion, I have included a few helpful tips to spice up your destination dining experience. Happy Eating!

• Most cities have international markets or sections of town where you can purchase authentic herbs, spices, meats, pastries and cheese.
• Just in case you don’t have an old family recipe, use the internet to find unique recipes and food combination.
• Be creative. Stamp a mock passport with all the locations you have traveled in your destination dining.
• Dress for the occasion. Wear an outfit from the country you’re visiting.

Cheap Gas Anonymous

I had another cheap episode last night. While returning home from a lovely dinner with Mr. Diva’s Aunt and Uncle in Orangeburg, SC, we decided we needed to stop and get some gas before we got back home. This would have been an easy task if the gas on the road was not 10 cents higher then back in Columbia. Keep in mind, O-burg to Columbia is only 45 min to 1hour drive, but I really don’t want the gas light to flash at me when I am between exits.

Mr. Diva decides to stop at the gas station and quickly informs me he is putting $25.00 of mid-grade gas in the car. This was his way of putting enough gas in the car to get home and hold off visiting the gas station for a couple of days.

SN: Yes I am spoiled! I hate pumping gas so Mr. Diva does it for me.

At any rate, I almost had a coronary! I quickly figured the amount of money I could save if we just put enough gas in the car to get us home then fill up the tank in Columbia. After a 5 minute price comparison argument and against my better judgment, Mr. Diva gets $20.00 of mid-grade petro. Needless to say I was hot! Didn’t he realize it was the principles of not letting the oil companies rule our life? It’s not the 10 cents that really matters. It’s the satisfaction of saying you got cheap gas! Finally at 10:30pm, we are on the road again with an additional 10 gallons of gas.

In the dark of the night, as the 18-wheelers rocked the car, I began to realize I needed help. I am addicted to cheap gas. My mind could not wrap around paying in total an extra…..$0.96. Yes, just 96 cents for the entire savings. It’s time for me to call the support group Cheap Gas Anonymous.

Friday Treat

It's Day 4 of the Summer Savings Challenge and I am not looking forward to Day 5.  I usually take my lunch 4 days and week then eat out on Friday. It's just a little end of the week treat.  I don't do it every Friday but this week has been long and I am in need my treat.  Well....Day 5 is Friday.  What am I going to do?  I need my little treat!  It's usually just me and no one else. My time to get whatever I want to eat without worrying about the Diva Kids or Mr. Diva.  *frown*

I know what I will do. I am going to consult the mother of pick me up food, Paula Deen.  Oh, Food Godmother Paula, what shall I take for lunch tomorrow?  After searching the www.pauladeen.com site, I figured out what I want for my treat.  I am going to make some fresh bruschetta. That will make me happy!  I still have the tomatoes from my visit to the farmers market and balsamic vinaigrette in the cabinet.  I think I will top it off with some lemonade.  OK I'm all better now. Thanks Food Godmother Paula, you saved my lunch again.

Shoestring Diva Bruschetta( Cheap. Easy. Delicious)

2 slices of toasted bread
1 chopped fresh tomato
Feta Cheese
Parsley Flakes, Salt, Pepper
Balsamic Vinaigrette

Toast  the bread in tear into bit sized pieces.  Chop up the tomato into small cubes and place in a small bowl.  Add desired amount of parsley flakes, salt and fresh ground pepper.  Pour tomato mixture over the toasted bread.  Top with feta cheese and sprinkle the desired amount f balsamic vinaigrette.

Summer Saving Challenge Day 2

Yesterday was a great day to save. I took my leftover lasagna and it was just as delicious as night before. To top off the good day, Cupcake had a power hour and I was able to get a scrumptious Mocha cupcake for FREE! Can you say AWE-SOME! I did unfortunately break one rule and bought a cup of coffee from Starbucks. I got the regular brew and not a fancy caramel coffee like I usually get. On second thought, I didn't officially break the rule because it was technically breakfast (before 11:00am) when I got the coffee.

Tip:  I suggest switching up your lunch for Day 3.  If you are like me, you have taken leftovers for the past couple of days.  Make something fresh like a good sandwich. I brought a cajun turkey sandwich with fresh tomatoes and lettuce.  Switching up your meals will help you combat lunch boredom. Great job on Day 2. Keep up the good work.

Summer Savings Challenge

Welcome to the first day of summer and Summer Savings Challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to promote budgeting and saving. Saving money can sometimes be a challenge. It’s hard to figure out where you are spending the most money. Eating out for lunch is a huge cost that can be modified into a savings. The Summer Savings Challenge is here to jump start your savings.

Here is how it works. Take your lunch to work for 10 days. For each day you take your lunch, place the money you would have spent on lunch out. Place it in a piggy jar, coin purse or just keep a tally. At the end of the 10 days, count up how much money you saved. It’s just that simple. Not only have you eaten all the leftovers in the fridge but you paid yourself in return.

Here is one trick I find very helpful. I plan out my lunches just like my dinners. I try to use the products from my grocery list more than one time. For instance I may have a sandwich one day and use the toasted bread as croutons the next day. Try it out. It works! Good Luck!

Lunch Grocery List

• Bacon (can be used for breakfast too)

• Green Leaf Lettuce

• Fresh tomatoes

• Wheat bread

• Peaches

• Healthy Choice Meal

• Yogurt x 5 (can be used from breakfast too)

• Lean Cuisine Meal x 2

Lunch Meals

Monday- BLT

Tuesday- Salad with bacon, toasted bread crumbs with dressing

Wednesday- Left over baked chicken and broccoli from Tuesday night dinner

Thursday- Homemade chicken salad (made from Tuesday night’s chicken) and fresh peaches

Friday- Lean Cuisine Meal

5 Tips to Creating a New Look for Your Bathroom

Guest Diva Vivica Ashford, owner of One of a Kind Interior Designs and Renovations gives us some tips on how to turn your bathroom from drab to fab for less.

Smooches, The Diva

5 tips To Creating A New Look for Your Bathroom
Vivica Ashford

Spring is almost over and summer is approaching fast, some homeowners still haven’t tackled there Spring project list or what I like to call “The Honey Do” List. One of the projects on the list may be renovating the bathroom. I know you are tired of that old outdated look. In my experience, renovating doesn’t mean gutting the entire bathroom, which can cost thousands of dollars. Turn a room from drab to fab in just a weekend in a cost effective way. These days are about fantastic living. Your bathroom is no longer a place to just take a shower, it’s a place where you can unwind and relax. So turn your bathroom into a spa resort this weekend by using these 5 tips.

Tip #1 Paint

Paint can give your bathroom a fresh look and it’s also the most inexpensive way to transform your space. The process of choosing a paint color can be a bit overwhelming. Just relax…it can be really fun. First pick out your favorite fabric and take it to your local paint store. Select colors from that piece to inspire your paint choice for your bathroom. You can never go wrong with a neutral color, but I challenge homeowners to think outside the box and jazz up you space with some color.

Tip #2 Hardware

Bathroom hardware is the easiest way to spruce up an old bathroom. Simple changes like switching out faucets, handles on vanities, shower rods, and towel rods with the same finish can be a less expensive element. Many older bathrooms may have chrome or old rusty bronze faucets and handles. Try something different such as brush nickel finish or if you like the bronze look just replace the hardware with an oil bronze finish. You’ll be amazed with the outcome.

Tip #3 Lighting

The light fixtures are one simple way to brighten your bathroom. A vanity light allows you to upgrade a key part of your bathroom’s décor. Vanity lights are more stylish than ever. They come many shapes and sizes. Pendant lights are very popular. They come in a variety of colors but they don’t give off excess light. I recommend pendant lighting if there is plenty of natural light in your bathroom. If you bathroom has little or natural light, I recommend a modern track lighting system.

Tip #4 Caulking

Caulking is a waterproof filler and sealant that is used to make a watertight seal. In older homes, caulk is the white sealant around your sink and tubs. If your caulk was white and now has mold, it needs to be replaced. This is something that you can do yourself. It will give a fresh look to your bathroom. They even have colored caulk to match the décor of the bathroom. There are different types of caulk depending on the structure of your bathroom. I recommend cut a piece of the caulk with a razor and taking it to a professional. They can inform you on what type of caulk to purchase at your local hardware store such as Lowe’s or Home Depot.

Tip #5 Accessories

Another simple way to improve the look of your bathroom is using accessories. If you have a plain space and don’t have a lot of money to spend on decorating, this is a great way to give your bathroom a makeover. You can accessorize with colored towels, a retro style shower curtain with bold colors, and wall art. An inexpensive way to add artwork to your wall without busting your budget is to purchase a few picture frames and wallpaper of your choice with pop colors such as reds, yellows, and greens. Cut out the wallpaper to fit the frame and insert the wallpaper as you would a photograph and hang them on the walls of the bathroom. This is a good way to achieve the look you may be going for without purchasing expensive artwork. Now you’ve created an original piece or art!

Los Angeles or Bust – Part 1

Don’t take the train!

I’ve just begun to plan for the perfect summer vacation to Los Angeles. The City of Angels displays an allure and mystery for many Southerners. Hollywood, movie stars and Rodeo Drive appear so fascinating on TV. Heck, California is all the way on the other side of the country. Who wouldn’t want to visit? There are three ways to get to Los Angeles; plane, train or automobile. My goal is to get a family of 4 to Los Angeles from South Carolina in the most inexpensive and less stressful way. In the Los Angeles or Bust series, I will examine the best method of travel for my family. Let’s start with a train.

Step one: See if there is a direct route from Columbia to Los Angeles on Amtrak. Answer: Of course, NOT! My best bet would be to catch the train in Charlotte. Cool… we love The Queen City. Fortunately, Amtrak offers two routes. Unfortunately, both choices take over 65 hours one way! Can you imagine 65 hours with a 9 and 13 year old asking you how long the trip is going to take? All I see in my future is pure torture. The train does offer family suites to make the ride more comfortable but that adds an extra $2500 to the overall cost. So... we can either sit upright in a chair for over 130 hours or purchase a very small moving apartment.

The layover on the train is FAB-U-LOUS. We would switch trains midway through the trip in New Orleans. The layover is about 13 hours. We would arrive in NO at 7:38pm and leave the next morning at 11:55am. That gives time for a great dinner, shopping and sightseeing. FAB-U-LOUS… until you consider you would need a hotel room to sleep until the train leaves in the morning… more money. Not to mention a hotel in Los Angeles and another 65 hours return trip.

Diva Conclusion: Traveling by train from Columbia to Los Angeles is very costly and not time efficient. For a family of 4, using the train would cost upwards of $5,000 for a one week trip. Most of the trip would be spent in a confined railcar. I know there is a theatre car and a dining car but who wants to be confined for 65 hours. Heck, it only takes 21 hours and $1,800 to fly to Africa. I think we will use Amtrak for short trips to places like Florida. At least there is a direct route from Columbia. Looks like the train is out for going to Los Angeles. I think I’ll try the plane next.

Pay taxes! Get Free Food!

April 15th can be a stressful day. Everyone dreads paying taxes, filling out the forms and even going to the post office. I bet you don’t dread the refund! Here are few tips to remind you about tax savings.

  • File an extension instead of rushing to get it done. You may miss out on crucial tax credits by not evaluating your entire situation. File form 4868 for your extension. Don’t forget to file your state tax extension. It is a separate form.
  • If you owe, try to pay at least 90 percent of your debt. The extension granted is for filing not paying taxes. The interest rate is 4% on tax debt.
  • If you are not able to pay your tax bill, call the IRS. The IRS has a number of programs that you can use in order to pay your tax bill. Contrary to popular belief, I found the IRS to be very helpful and courteous.
  • Use the IRS.gov to file your taxes. It’s free!
  • Sign your return.
Many companies are offering sweet deals to help celebrate your finished tax return. Check out these specials.
  • All Cinnabon restaurants are giving away a free order of Cinnabites to each customer.
  • Chick-fil-A: At participating locations, hold on to your receipt tomorrow and return before April 30th to receive the same meal for free.
  • Papa John's: Get a large cheese pizza with up to three toppings for $10.40 when you activate coupon code "1040" now through midnight on April 15th.
  • Subway restaurants want to give taxpayers a reason to look forward to the typically dreaded April 15 by offering everyone who walks into a Subway on tax day a free cookie.
  • Bring in your travel mug to Starbucks and get a free coffee.
  • McCormick & Schmick’s will reward any professional tax preparer who dines on April 16 with a complimentary dessert with the purchase of an entrée at lunch or dinner. Professional tax preparers will also receive a $10.40 dining certificate in exchange for their business card.
  • Boston Market: For a "last-minute tax break" — one free meal for each one you buy through Sunday — show this coupon: chicagotribune.com/bostonmarket.
  • IHOP: The restaurant chain is offering free dinner for one child age 12 or younger with each adult meal purchased from 4 to 10 p.m. all month long.
  • P.F. Chang's: Get 15 percent off food purchases for dine-in or take-out, excluding alcohol and happy hour food and beverages.
  • MaggieMoo's: Get one free slice of ice cream pizza — ice cream with red frosting to look like sauce and white chocolate to look like cheese — at participating locations from 3 to 7 p.m.

I will not compromise!

Recently I was shopping at the grocery store and came across an advertisement that claimed –make the switch to generic and save money. Being a true frugal-nista, I made the switch. After all, the ad claimed it would save me money without skimping on the taste. I made the decision and tried the challenge with my purchase of American cheese slices. Who can mess up cheese slices? It’s a simple food-like item. I left the store, proud of my purchase, all the while dreaming of my delicious grilled cheese sandwich I would make when I got home. At home, I unwrapped the generic cheese slices and immediately noticed the difference in color. Instead of a creamy pale buttery yellow, the generic cheese was bright yellow. No worries, I thought to myself. It’s just a different brand.

I began the process of making the perfect grilled cheese sandwich. For some reason, my cheese wasn’t melting as expected. This was cause for concern. How can I have the perfect grilled cheese sandwich if the cheese didn’t melt over the entire sandwich? Now, I’m worried. The true test is in the taste. Bite one… Bite two… Now swallow. Oh my GOODNESS! This is NOT cheese! I want my money back! It tasted like …I can’t even describe it.

From my dastardly experience, I learned that it is ok to have a “I will not compromise" list. Everyone has to have one. For me, it’s Kraft and Borden cheese all the way. I just can’t compromise. There are just some things you can’t buy generic. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t search for the best bargain or use coupons. Try to find coupons in advance of your shopping trips. That way you won’t be forced to pay full price. Here’s a sample of my list. In your free time, comprise your own.

Shoestring Diva’s “Brand Name (no generics) list”

1. Kraft or Borden Cheese

2. Heinz not Hunt’s Ketchup (Thank Tracy)

3. Miracle whip

4. Spanx

5. Lotion- Suave is the cheapest I will go

6. Perfume

7. Applewood bacon

8. Dove Men's Care Soap

9. Alka Setlzer

10. Ramen Noodles

Movies cost an arm and a leg

While watching the Oscar’s last Sunday, I had an epiphany. Although I hear the numbers every weekend, I was in utter shock! The highest grossing movie…362.1 million dollars domestically… didn’t win best picture! I can’t believe the amount of money Americans spend to be entertained. The Husband took the offspring to see a matinee on Saturday and it cost $25! I already had dinner planned so I told them not to buy popcorn. Good thing because that popcorn would have been their last supper. That brings me to this week’s blog. Entertainment is not free. It may cost you an arm and a leg.

Most people are paying for cable or satellite channels in their home. Thanks FCC. In my house, we have at least 200 channels even though we can only watch one channel at a time. Use these channels to your advantage. Call over some friends and entertain them with a movie via pay-per -view or premium channel movie. Sharing an average cost of a pay-per-view movie of $4.99 between 4-6 people is a lot more economical than $8 a piece. Movie night at home is a great way to save money and build friendships.
Here are some elements for movie night entertaining:

  • Try to choose a movie that is showing on your premium movie channels. If you are already paying for it; use it.
  • Turn down the lights to create a movie theater glow.
  • Make some popcorn and add seasonings from your own cupboard. Sprinkle a little garlic, parmesan cheese or even sugar to create different flavors. I like extra buttery.
  • Have a pot luck dinner and turn movie night into “dinner and a movie”.
  • Plan ahead. Watch the TV guide for movie premiers. If you are purchasing, DVD or Blue Ray release dates often comes with price cuts.
  • Instead of purchasing a movie from the store, rent one. If you are not a repeat movie watcher, it may not be in  your best interest to purchase.
  • Remember the classics. Classics movies are often on the discount shelves in stores.
  • Visit your local library. That right check out up to date DVD’s for free.
Until next time,

State Fair Food

A couple of weeks ago The Husband and I went to our monthly couples gathering with a few of our favorite duos. Honestly my day prior to the outing was a complete bust so I wanted to go home and vegge. But I couldn’t stand up one of my favorite Diva Friends and her Mr. Diva. Fortunately they did not disappoint us. The food, company and atmosphere were perfect for an evening with good friends. It was just what I needed to unwind and relax. I have to give credit to my Diva Friend for throwing a swanky party without all the frills.
This month, the hostess used a theme of The State Fair. In the south, the State Fair is a huge event in which people buy new clothes, plan out the fair walking route and even use as first dates. The State Fair is also the one place where you can find all your culinary vices in one location. I’m talking about corn dogs, sausage dogs, polish dogs and Italian dogs. Did I cover all the dogs? You can dine on fine pastries such as elephant ears, fried Oreos and homemade donuts. Let us not forget the fried mushrooms and french fries. Yes, the state fair is a place that lives in the heart and mind of every Southerner. After The State Fair, the cholesterol lives in your heart too. Ah… the memories…
Diva Friend made a few of our favorite State Fair delights right in her kitchen. Her fried mushrooms were made with ordinary button mushrooms and tempura batter. Our elephant ears were created with regular refrigerated canned biscuits that are flattened before frying in hot oil. Of course we added powered sugar and cinnamon. As if we needed more calories, she made homemade caramel and candy apples topped with nuts. Wow! We were able to experience the fair in February (usually in Fall) without the cost of a pricey entrance ticket or rides that you haven’t ridden since you were ten. When entertaining, sometimes it only takes a theme to make a party fun. Spending time with good friends is a lot more enjoyable than spending lots of money to entertain them. Dang it! Now I want an elephant ear.

You might be cheap if...

How do you know when you are being cheap or just frugal?  This very thought crossed my mind when I realized I drove over 5 minutes to save only 2 cents in gas.  I was just being cheap.  I must fight the urge to cross the border into Cheapville.  Frugal living is not about finding the lowest price at any cost.  It is wisely budgeting and seeking the best value for all aspects of life.  I have comprised a top ten list to help us maintain our citizenship in Frugal Town and not visit Cheapville.
You may be cheap if:
  1. You waste gas by driving out of your way to save on less expensive gas.
  2. You celebrate holidays the day after the actual holiday so you can get gifts half off.
  3. You make your own lemonade at a restaurant by ordering a glass water, asking for lemons and adding sugar.
  4. You only purchase items at Target on the 75% off rack even though it doesn’t quite fit.
  5. You haggle on the price of a knock off designer
  6. You force your family to wear coats and blankets indoors because you don’t want to turn up the thermostat
  7. You preference your purchases by saying “it’s not that bad, I can fix it up.”
  8. The store clerk immediately directs you to the expired baked good section.
  9. Your idea of a vacation is only visiting places where your family lives so you don’t have to pay for a hotel.
  10. You keep the coffee cup from a restaurant in hopes of getting a free refill.

Don't be a Cheap Charlie!!

Birthday Mooch Patrol

Although my birthday has come and gone, the celebration continues. I’ve told you guys before that signing up for discount cards at stores is a great idea. You might think you will get a lot of emails or junk mail but if you are living on a budget, the benefits of store coupons are priceless. This week, I’ve been on Mooch Patrol. I can’t tell you how much I racked up in free gifts. That’s right, free gifts from businesses that just want to say happy birthday! All I had to do was add my email to their mailing list.

My first “mooches” came by way of emails from World Market, CVS, and Moe’s Southwestern Grill. World Market sent me a coupon for $10.00 off a purchase of $10.00 or more. All I had to do was pay the sales tax. I was able to get some gourmet eats for my special birthday evening for 96 cents. Next was Moe’s. “Welcome to Moe’s” was music to my ears when I ate my free entrée for lunch. The nice lady behind the counter even threw in some queso dip for my free chips. Now that is some good eatin’! CVS is one of my personal favorites. CVS gives me a coupon every time I walk in the door. I just scan my rewards card with their handy machine and out comes a coupon. For my birthday, CVS was so kind as to send me a $2.00 off coupon. Wouldn’t you know it? We happen to have been out of lotion at home. See, coupons really do work. I am so glad because ashy legs are not very diva like. Signing up for rewards cards saves you money and gets you free gifts.

I must confess: the best mooch of all came by way of a Goddaughter’s 2nd birthday party. She happens to have been born a day after my birthday. Her mom provided delicious free hot dogs and cake. Yet, that wasn’t the mooch. The mooch occurred when I was able to act like a silly 2 year old and no one knew it was for me; not the kid. Nothing feels better than playing with toys for your own enjoyment but passing it off like you are entertaining the youngsters. Now that living life to the fullest!

3 Tips to Stay Ahead of the Game!
Courtney Young

You made it through 2009 and here are three tips to stay ahead of the game in 2010!

1) APPRECIATE YOUR CUSTOMERS

Sure you know your business, but do you know your customers? Well… if you don't, you should. If you think you do, it's time to check in or check your bottom line, because that's your truth teller. Customers are the very lifeline that keeps your business operating. Their changing taste and preferences vary from time to time so it's up to you to keep them interested. That is if you want them to keep your business open. For example, you could offer a free gift to repeat customers; establish a referral program with a discount attached to encourage new customers with similar taste. The point is keep up with them and they will keep up with you.

Remember: Keep it simple. Give them what they want, but don't break the bank.

2) SHARE YOUR ADVERTISING COST

Do you have a business neighbor that has a non-competing product line? Sure you do. Why not share the HIGH cost of advertising with them. In this economy, quality and impactful marketing are vital for any business venture, so why not get the most for your money? If you're hosting an event to introduce a new product line, consider inviting a neighboring business to split the advertising cost by sharing the advertising space. Picture this: a magazine advertisement with your business offering on the right and theirs on the left! Examples of cost-share partners include: Boutiques (shoe - clothes), Health/ Beauty ( hair salon- massage spa), Special Events (pastry baker- event planner), etc.

Remember: Its business. You’re getting bigger bang if they share in paying the bucks!

3) BE CONSISTENT

The high cost of losing customers far out ways keeping in touch with them! It's pretty simple. Set yourself a six month plan of action to keep your customers informed about product releases, changing trends, discount offerings, and/or product line reminders. This tactic will vary based on your product or service offerings, but the theory is consistency. For example, you can send out a monthly email with product promotions, a postcard with birthday discounts, or even host private showings on new product lines.

Remember: You want to stay ahead of the competition and sometimes all it takes is to stay on their mind.

I'd wish you all best of luck! If you use the simple tips in your marketing plan, then you won't need luck!

I wanna new bedroom set!

I have a dilemma. I want a new bedroom set but I don’t want to pay an average of $1600 to $2000. My husband and I have visited several of the chain furniture stores to no avail. They lured us in by offering 12 months interest free financing or a beautiful flat screen TV. Well Mr. Chain Furniture Store, you L.I.E! I am not going to be caught in your tangled web of sales secrets. You will not catch me enjoying the additional bench the sales person threw in just for special customers like me. I am not falling for it… again.

In my frustration, I experienced a moment of clarity. You may call it an epiphany. Do I really need another bedroom set or am I just tired of looking at the old one? I must face the truth. Although another bedroom set with shiny knobs and fantastic ebony sheen is the subject of my daydreams, my current oak set is highly functional and a reality. So… how do I satisfy my desire to have a new bedroom with a limited budget? This is a case for the Shoestring Diva.

Over the next several weeks, along with your frugal living tips and blogs, I will be documenting my escapades into shoestring decorating. I do have a budget in mind but I will not reveal my goal until our Facebook “bedroom bid” contest is completed on January 31st. I am definitely up to the task. My bedroom is going to be fabulous!

Until next time…

Bon Voyage! by Heather Stallworth

It’s a new year and endless possibilities are on the horizon for your next vacation. In today’s time we all are trying to save money and our travel plans are no exception. There is no sure fire way on how to get the best travel deals. However there are steps everyone can take to become a smart traveler and get the best bang for your buck.

  • Research, research, research!!! When planning your next vacation getaway, research and compare on average of 5-6 websites offering a comparable package.
  • All-inclusive are the best way to save big when traveling to one destination. Websites like www.travelzoo.com www.cheapcaribbean.com and www.vacationstogo.com are a few that provide great deals and rates that you won’t be able to beat. Are you an avid facebooker or tweet on the regular? Once you decide on your package “add” or “follow” the website and they normally will email a coupon code to use on your checkout for extra money off your package.
  • Bon voyage! You can get great travel deals on cruises by using websites like Expedia or Travelocity, however, if you want to find an amazing cruise for the low-low try www.cruisecomplete. Cruising sounds so good right now I might just log on myself and scoop up a 3-nt Caribbean for $299 on my personal favorite www.cruisesonly.com. I find myself on this website weekly. Not only do they guarantee everything but they offer customer reviews and in-depth information on the ships and destinations.
Need even more discounts? WHO DOESN’T?? Before your trip log on to ebay and purchase coupons for lodging, transportation, food, admission and entertainment. Simply search for your destination and type in “coupon” or “gift certificate”

Journey on the Go!
  1. Before exchanging foreign currency at the airport, find out if there is a departure tax, once you pay tax and are through security there are exchange ports in all terminals.W
  2. When traveling with children, take recent, wallet sized pictures of them in case you get separated, also have your children have a recent picture of you with your number or emergency contact on the back in the event you are separated and your family does not speak the local language, keep in a snack sized zip-lock bag for better photo protection.
  3. Looking for authentic food? Go for the more crowded pub or vendor. Locals know the best spots!

Tips from an almost seasoned traveler.

A Simple Way to Get Noticed!

Greetings Everyone,

This week’s blogs, tweets, and status updates will be dedicated to budding businesses and business tips. In this edition, I want to let you know about the power of the business card. To some it may seem like a tiny piece of paper, but in reality, the business card tells everyone who you are, what you stand for and why they need you in their life. Below are a few tips that will help you get noticed. Remember, business cards are an inexpensive form of marketing and advertising. Be sure to leave a lasting impression.
  • Pass Them Out! - What good is a card if you don’t give them out? Why are they still sitting in the box and you’ve had them for 6 months? Distribute 5-10 business cards a day. You think this may be impossible but really it isn’t. You don’t have to be in a closed setting to give someone your business card. Give your card to the cashier at the Wal-Mart, a bank teller or even the gas station attendant. The more people who have your information the better your odds in making that connection.
  • Make a Reference!- Although I am a Diva, my memory doesn’t always work when I want it to. I find cards and can’t remember where I got it. Don’t be like me. Write down on the card where you received it, date, and even some bullets about the conversation you had with the person. These simple tips will help you when fostering relationships by referral, business to business, and/or follow-ups.
  • Back it Up! - Business cards have a front and a back. Use as much space as possible to convey your message. The front of the card should always have information available for the “scan” such as name, title, business name, contact info and services. The “scan” is what a person can read in 10 seconds or less. It is important that the front of your card is clean and concise for this reason. The back is your playground.
  • Follow up!- Follow up doesn’t mean stalking. Sending a quick email or a handwritten note is a great way to stay on the mind of the recipient. Remember, you are developing relationships not just business.
  • File away! - I try to file cards I receive in one location by industry. Of course that is when I am feeling really organized. Diva Solution: take a three ring binder and use baseball card or business card clear insert sheets. Use file tabs for further organization. Be sure to clean out old card with obsolete information every now and then.
  • Pay it forward! - Take two cards from people you are comfortable in referring services. When referring the services of others, place your name on the card so they can acknowledge from where the referral came. This builds a two way network and you are just being plain ol' nice.
See, the business card is more than just piece of paper.  Looking for business cards?  Online resources like Vistaprint and 1-2-3 Print have low cost, high quality business card.  Sometimes you can purchase them for FREE. OK maybe not free since you have to pay postage.  The premimum selection and advance editing on Vistaprint gives you even more options.  Places like Kinkos and Staples offer business card services.  If all else fails, print them yourself.  Make sure to use quality paper!

If you have some tips you have tried and find helpful. Share them with the Shoestring Diva Network. You can comment on this blog, our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/shoestringdiva) or on twitter http://www.twitter.com/shoestringdiva).

Ideas Personified

So you want to be in business; that’s wonderful! Now let’s bring that brilliant idea to life. Having a business idea is easy, but taking action is a bit harder. I know what you are thinking; opening a business takes money, but there are plenty of free or low cost resources that will get you on the right track. That is why The Shoestring Diva is here!

Most people don’t know where to begin. Step one: Plan like you have never planned before. When I started my first business, all I had was a piece of paper of what I perceived I needed to get started. I knew I needed a business plan, but that cost anywhere from $300.00 and up. I sought free templates online and still couldn’t quite understand what the heck each section was asking. That is when I found my local SCORE and the USC School of Business. I worked on my business plan for free with them. Many colleges and universities have community services as a part of their school of business. I also sought help from the Benedict-Allen Community Development Center (CDC) and Palmetto Center for Women. Both organizations are designed to give you free or low cost economic development services.

Don’t forget to plan for the downsides of business as well. Develop a plan for marketing and advertising, financing, and even how your family will be affected by opening a new business. Strategic planning is key!
Step Two: Become legit. It does not cost a lot to become a limited liability company (LLC) or incorporated (INC). As a sole proprietor, there is so much liability on you personally. In South Carolina, the Secretary of the State charges a one-time fee of $110.00 to become a LLC. Just think, your business will be a reality for less than $9.00 a month for the first year. That may mean no lattes or Big Mac’s but look at the reward.
After you get your Certificate of Existence, go to www.irs.gov and get your federal tax id number. Your business and Uncle Sam are now married. If you are wise you’ll consult your CPA, for a pre-nuptial evaluation. Next, contact your county and city business offices to get the fees on your business license. If you are going into retail, you must also get a resellers license. Stop worrying about the cost of the fees. You just got started they will be extremely low.

Look at that! Your dreams are now reality! If you are in SC, you have only paid an average of $200.00 or less to start your business. Sometimes investments of time are more important than money. If you take the time to plan, build relationships and research, you’ll discover that ideas personified are not the far out of your reach.

Coming soon: Marketing, Websites and Networking on a shoestring budget!

Leftovers Made Brand New!

For Christmas I cooked a great meal; fried chicken, pork roast, collard greens, mushroom rice, squash casserole, corn bread and iced tea. A meal worthy of ooo’s and aah’s. Due to the fact I only know how to cook for a family of 5 now, I had a ton of leftover in the fridge. In my family, the leftover meter ranges from one child that is totally opposed to eating leftovers to a husband that will eat anything in the fridge that doesn’t have fur on it. I was able to make three meals out of those leftovers. With a little bit of craftiness, I saved time, money and food. Here how I did it.

For Saturday lunch, I warmed up fried chicken, mushroom rice with roast gravy and corn bread. I added some new vegetables of green beans. This meal was a big hit at the table with the picky child. He had no clue it was the same food.

For Saturday dinner, I reheated the pork roast and collard greens. I added a parmesan flavored pasta-roni for the starch and kool-aid for the drink. Once again, big hit at the table. I reminded my husband that leftovers are best if eaten within 3 days.

Finally Sunday came around and I needed just one more meal. The fridge was almost cleaned out and I was struggling to find a recipe for the last pieces of the pork roast. Then an epiphany occurred; pork fried rice. We had barbeque ribs, pork fried rice, spring mix salad and tea.

I did it! I used all the leftovers from Christmas dinner. Do you know how much money we saved? Saturday’s lunch and dinner side additions only cost $2.50. Sunday’s dinner only added an extra $10.00 to the food budget. That means three days worth of eating for a family of 5 for $12.50. I impressed myself. I should earn honorary “Iron Chef” status for this one.
